Ectoparasites

Ectoparasites can impact on body condition, fitness, flying ability or even long-term survival of the hosts.

The parasitic load of birds tends to increase along the breeding season and may affect egg production and chick mortality.

Red mites are the most commonly observed ectoparasites in Swifts. They can cause intense irritation and restlessness. They suck blood and may cause anaemia and debility, and can be fatal to young birds.

Apply the product in a gauze and pass it gently over the bird’s feathers at the upper and lower parts.

Be careful to avoid applying it to the eyes or other mucous membranes.
Wait a few hours before joining the patient with other swifts, if quarantine is not necessary for other clinical reasons.
